In our fourth Room Recreation blog we are getting a little funky… Our inspiration image is from Architectural Digest and features a harmonious mish-mash of different styles, colors and textures in the living room of designer Penny Francis. This “Lively New Orleans Home” features French antiques alongside mid-century modern accents and somehow it just works! Some people LOVE this quirky look while others prefer something simpler or more classic. But for those of us that love maximalism – let’s jump in!

LET’S RECREATE A LOUNGE FROM AN INSPIRATION PHOTO:

When it comes to mixing and matching different styles you must consider balance. Do patterns clash or mesh? Do silhouettes complement each other or look too similar? It takes a keen eye to find balance with decor pieces from different eras – especially when the colors are bold!

In the inspiration picture the curves of the crescent moon sofa are echoed in the curves of the two venetian lamps – but the Ming style coffee table, with its strong edges and heavy visual weight, anchor the space. The Louis XVI chairs, with their rich teal velvet and delicate floral pattern, bring more color to the space and create balance with the colorful lamps parallel on the other side of the room. Balance is achieved! 

We tried to mimic this controlled chaos with pieces from our own rental inventory that you can recreate at your next event. The curved Edie Sofa and the Ming Coffee table create the same effect as the AD lounge – while the Mini Trillion Lamps and colorful Peacock Garden Stools imitate the brightness that the orange venetian lamps bring to the space. Finally, the deep red velvet of the Dahlia armchair – also Louis XVI – brings texture and rich jewel toned color to complete the look.
